2 ideas

A rare moment of inspiration has hit me:

A world like "Discworld" - a separate cosmos but with matter made up of what shapes our world. A parallel universe where space is vast and unexpected.

An auction is being held in one solar system. A massive glass menagerie travels a railroad towards the venue. Creature being transported as cargo across space. Something goes awry - (but what?) and the cargo bay is opened. The lock is released and a creature escapes from the glass menagerie. A giant salamander, thought to be extinct, possessing the ability to travel dimensions and time in all manner of ways. Forwards, backwards, sideways, diagonally etc.

The second idea is a lot less exciting and reads much more like an Asimov short story but more horribly thought out and far less logical

Involves "night shift" and "day shift", told in first person of a night shift worker, whose species in a highly regimented society dictates that they can only appear after sun down. Long millenias have meant that these beings are highly vulnerable to sunlight and much prefer the dark anway. Until a phenomena occurs - a supernova light years away triggers phosphorescence etc as well as gradually shortening of night time hours.

Panic ensues as "apocalypse" is predicted.

The end is nigh and one youngster decides that they will brave the day. His/her eyes are burnt dry and replaced with mechanical ones instead which feed directly into the brain through an optic fibre of some sort. The skin is also burn and he/she receives surgery for that as well. Some Night shifters begin to do this as well, in order to adapt. But others turn against them due to the horrific sight of the injuries...
